Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a "car show" with judging and classes?

No, ALL PONTIAC & GMC TRUCK DAY is a FREE, fun, and NON-JUDGED vehicle display and gathering of enthusiasts, together with a Membership Drive.

There are NO Classes or Judging, NO Trophies... except for THREE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS (see Question #16 below).

AZ Chapt Logo
I am not a member of any club. Am I still allowed to display my 2001 Pontiac Trans Am?

Yes, our event is FREE and open to all enthusiasts of Pontiacs, Oaklands, and GMC Trucks. The Arizona Chapter #29 of the Pontiac-Oakland Club, International (POCI), is actively seeking new members, so we will urge you to please consider joining! Non-members' (prospective members') vehicles will be parked alongside member-owned vehicles for this four-hour event.

POCI emblem
What does it cost to join the club?

Membership has two facets: The "international" club, and the "local" club. Membership in POCI affords you Smoke Signals, the only monthly magazine available today for Pontiac enthusiasts. Members have access to excellent technical advisors,  while the magazine provides excellent tech articles, stories and free classified ads. Members can also attend the national convention and car show/swap meets. Dues are $39/year.

Local membership in the Arizona Chapter #29 (our membership is centered in Tucson) is separate at $18/year, and provides you with our monthly newsletter "HOT AIR," plus local activites, meetings, cruises and a fun, friendly knowledge base.

Where can I find more information about the club online?

The international club's website is www.poci.org
The local chapter's website is  www.poci-azch29.com

What years and models of Pontiacs/Oaklands/GMC Trucks are invited?

Easy answer: ALL YEARS and ALL MODELS. If it wears a Pontiac, Oakland, or GMC badge, it is welcomed! See a complete list at the bottom of this page.

Oakland &GMC Collage
What's an "Oakland" ...and why GMC Trucks?

In the early days of General Motors, the Oakland Motor Car Company was based in Pontiac, Michigan (located in Oakland County), In 1926, GM asked Oakland to introduce a lower-priced "companion" car — the Pontiac — which quickly became so succesful that the Oakland nameplate was discontinued after 1931.

GMC Truck & Coach Division was also based in Pontiac, MI. In various years (especially in the late 1950s) GMC pickups were built with Pontiac-sourced motors. Thus, POCI recognizes the importance and legacy of all three of these nameplates...  past and present!

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra 4x4 that is lifted and has custom graphics and big wheels/tires. Is this OK to put on display?

Yes, especially if you have an interest in joining the club!

Are any Chevy trucks allowed to be displayed there?

No. Our parent club (POCI) recognizes only trucks titled as GMCs.

I have a 1932 Ford Street Rod (modified vehicle) but it has a Pontiac V-8 engine. Am I allowed to be a part of this event?

Ultimately, the answer is "yes," but perhaps it would be better to base your participation on if you are a proud "Pontiac enthusiast" interested in joining the club.

I am trying to sell my wife's 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. May I park it there with a "FOR SALE" sign?

Let's be realistic here: If your sole focus is in selling this car (not in club membership), your interests aren't aligned with the purpose of this event. Perhaps park it on a nearby side street or in the spectator area (top level of the parking deck). Otherwise, see the next question.

Are any "For Sale" signs permitted within the display area?

Yes, as long as the sign is of a discreet size and kept within the interior of your vehicle.

Is there a Parts Swap Meet associated with this event?

No. We are trying to keep the focus of this event simple. No vendors, no swap spaces, no concessioneers.

Can I display my non-running, non-licensed 1968 Pontiac Tempest if it is brought to the event and remains loaded-up on my car trailer?

Yes, if you feel that your car's presence would be of interest to clubmembers and fellow enthusiasts, we encourage you to push, pull, or drag it there on a trailer! We will ask you to please park your "truck-trailer-Pontiac" combo in our designated "overflow area" on the upper parking deck. (Plus, your car may even become a contender for our "Golden Jackstand" Award! See #16 below.)

Also, if you should be able to get your car running in time for the event, you might want to consider getting a "Restricted Three-Day Permit" from the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles. Visit www.ServiceArizona.com to create (print) this permit from your computer. The cost is only $1.00.

My 1963 Pontiac Catalina is definitely a "work in progress," with faded paint and a couple of tears in the upholstery... but I am proud of it nonetheless! Can I still display it?

Yes! We understand that everyone has different circumstances and resources. Most importantly, we certainly respect your enthusiasm, so if you're proud of it...  bring it!  (Plus, it may even become a contender for our "Golden Jackstand" Award! See #16 below.)

I've got a 2008 Solstice GXP that is built for slalom racing and is no longer street legal. I want to display my car alongside all the other Pontiacs but was wondering where is the best place to park my truck/trailer rig?

Great question! Before you off-load the Solstice from your trailer, it would probably be best if you found a parking space for your rig along either of the side streets... Mountainview Avenue or Arcadia Avenue (but watch for the marked "No Parking" zones!)

GoldenJackstand 2014
What is the "Golden Jackstand" Award?  And, what are the other
awards presented at the end of the day?

ALL PONTIAC & GMC TRUCK DAY presents only these 3 special awards:
  • The Golden Jackstand! recognizes one vehicle (any year) with "promise and potential." It is intended to reinforce that our club respects Pontiacs/Oaklands/GMC Trucks in ANY CONDITION regardless of its owner's ability to afford a costly restoration! Push, pull or trailer it there...     We really do want to see it at this event!
  • The Bill Armstrong Memorial recognizes a modified or customized vehicle (any year) which is built to suit its owner's personal taste and unique vision.
  • The Ross Whitehead Memorial recognizes one significant pre-1964 vehicle which epitomizes enthusiasm for the Pontiac-Oakland-GMC Truck hobby.

What does it cost to participate?

Absolutely nothing! There are no mandatory costs or hidden fees to participate or to spectate. We are simply hoping to bring together as many enthusiasts as possible in a central Tucson location while promoting membership in the world's largest organization dedicated to the enjoyment and preservation of Pontiacs, Oaklands and GMC Trucks!

How can I pre-register for ALL PONTIAC & GMC TRUCK DAY?

We're keepin' things simple this year.  We will NOT be offering PRE-REGISTRATION, so don't worry about it!

Simply arrive at the event anytime between 10:00am and 11:00am and we'll get you REGISTERED ON-SITE... Free of charge!

Your pre-ordered T-Shirt(s) will be ready for you at our Registration Canopy. There, you'll also receive a windshield card, goodie bag and a collectible dash plaque.

Please plan to remain parked in-place until the event ends at 2:00pm.

If the event is free, why must I register ON-SITE?

Registration is necessary for two reasons: We want to have a record of all attendees with contact information so that we can keep you updated on future events.

But, most importantly, you will be required to sign a Release Form as needed by our club's insurance provider.

Enter from Mountainview Ave
Where exactly do I enter the display area?

On the accompanying map at left, look for the red arrow. From Broadway, please turn NORTH onto Mountainview Avenue (the first street east of Swan) and loop around behind the tall, five-story "4801" office building. We'll have volunteers ready to direct all display vehicles and spectator traffic from there.

as this will only create unneccessary traffic congestion in the parking areas reserved for hotel guests.

10 oclock
I have a tricked-out 1969 GMC Sprint Custom. How early may I arrive to set-up my display?

Looking forward to seeing it! Designated club members (ONLY!) will be arriving early (prior to 10am) to prepare the event for non-members' (prospective members') arrival AFTER 10:00am. (If you are not a current member or designated volunteer, please do not arrive before 10:00am.  There really is no rush!  Please relax and enjoy the opportunity to hang out with fellow enthusiasts!)

How can I be sure to get a FREE Dash Plaque?

To get a free, full-color limited-edition dash plaque, you MUST be one of the first 75 individuals to register on-site. Line-up for registration begins at 10:00am.

If there are fewer than 75 entries (registrations) and we have extra plaques available at the end of the day, the remaining plaques will be offered for sale on a first-come-first-served basis at $1.00 apiece.
What's this DISCOUNT TIRE $600 Gift Card Giveaway promotion and how does it work?

NEW this year! We hope to increase participation at our event AND at the 19th Annual Pontiac Heaven event near Phoenix exactly one week later. To be eligible to win a Gift Card from Discount Tire worth $600, you must attend both events. The rules are fairly simple. No purchase is necessary, but there is an entry fee to display your traditional Pontiac-powered* car at the Pontiac Heaven event on Sunday, November 12th

*CLICK HERE to learn exactly what you need to do to win AND to learn about what cars can or cannot be entered in the car show.

APD17 TeeShirt Graphic
Will souvenir T-Shirts be offered this year?

Yes! This year, we will be offering limited-edition full-color T-Shirts! Use the T-Shirt Pre-Order form to order your shirt(s), postmarked by the October 28th deadline.

Download and print this form, complete it, and mail it along with funds as indicated to the club treasurer. Again, it must be postmarked by Saturday, October 28th, 2017

The shirts are a high-quality pre-shrunk 100% cotton, and feature the images of a cool 1937 GMC pickup and a 1967 Pontiac GTO.

Shirts will NOT be available to purchase at the event; they must be pre-ordered! Order yours now!

DON'T HAVE A PRINTER? If you would still like to order a T-Shirt but aren't able to print this form, please send an email to Event Coordinator Thom Sherwood and he'll work with you to accommodate your order.

I want to participate and display my 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT, but I can't stay there all the way through 2:00pm. May I leave early?

Please do whatever is possible to commit your presence there until 2:00pm. If you absolutely must leave early, we suggest that you park in the upper parking deck area. Our main display area lot (adjacent to Broadway) will be used exclusively for vehicles who can commit to the full four-hour display. Regardless, please exercise extreme caution with the pedestrians and spectators as you depart.

I am fortunate to have a number of Pontiacs in my collection. Is there a limit as to how many I can bring to the event?

No, the more the better! Bring as many as you can find drivers for, but please make sure that each vehicle gets properly registered upon arrival.

As this event is happening during the lunch hour, what food options are available nearby?

The Viscount Suite Hotel has a great on-site restaurant, "Wilbur's Grill." Plans are in the works to offer a quick, reasonably-priced lunch special for both the public and hotel guests. A flyer with details will be found inside your goodie bag.

Otherwise, there are a few establishments within walking distance to the WEST, including: Lucky Wishbone (fried chicken, steak fingers), a 7-11 convenience store, the Hungry Fox Diner, and a Jack-in-the-Box. Next door to the EAST is Guadalajara Mexican Grill. A bit further EAST is a sandwich shop called "Melt," plus a Romano's Macaroni Grill, a Chili's, and an On-The-Border Mexican Restaurant.

If I pay membership dues and JOIN DURING THE EVENT, am I able to enjoy the free lunch provided on-site to Arizona Chapter POCI members?

Yes. All new and active Arizona Chapter #29 POCI clubmembers are invited to partake of a complimentary PIZZA PARTY picnic lunch, provided in a designated area adjacent to the display. This offer is extended to all current members, plus to those who join on-site at the event. Bottled water for everyone will once again be provided courtesy of Discount Tire.

 Caravan Arrow
My family is caravanning from Phoenix (caravan details & MAP here) with our 1957 Pontiac Chieftain. Are special hotel room rates for participants available at the Viscount?

Yes. The Viscount Suite Hotel has a special rate for our participants. Discounted nightly rates are $99 plus tax for a Deluxe Suite, and $109 plus tax for a Premier Suite, and must be booked NO LATER than October 28th.

You are urged to book as soon as possible. Call the Reservations Line directly at (520) 745-6500 or 1-800-527-9666 and request the "Pontiac Day" event rate.

In the event that the Viscount is completely booked when you call, please contact ALL PONTIAC & GMC TRUCK DAY event coordinator Thom Sherwood at 520-798-3200 for other nearby accommodation suggestions.

Silly question... What is the proper pronunciation of  the word "Viscount"?

The letter 'S' is silent, so the word "Viscount" rhymes with the phrase "High Count."

In case of inclement weather, is there a Rain Date?

No, our event will be held Rain-or-Shine!

What items would you suggest to bring (permitted items)?
  • Cooler with beverages and picnic items
  • Folding Chair(s)
  • Camera
  • Friends/family/enthusiasts
  • You may bring Display Memorabilia that is relevant to your car, such as: Owner's manual, original window sticker, photo albums, trophies, etc.)

What items are NOT permitted (discouraged items)?
  • Loud music and stereos
  • Hibachi grills, etc.
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Selling of car parts and automotive memorabilia
  • Pets/Dogs ...even on a leash!
